In the series Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, a variety of artist/writer teams explores the potential of the character had he existed in a variety of timelines. In the two part story "Destiny" which ran in issues 35-36 in 1992, created by writer Mark Kneece and artist Bo Hampton, we meet Jon Riksson, a Norwegian national who is being threatened by members of Asgard International, a business enterprise that is trying to buy out his home town and move the residents out. Flashbacks reveal that the two men have a linked background from centuries earlier when a masked hero known as the Bat Man fought along with the Viking Prince to defeat the giant Hrothgar, a Grendel-esque creature who kills for fun and carries off live victims for later sport. The story features numerous characters from Norse mythology, including Loki and Freyja, and links to Beowulf both through the character Hrothgar himself and through the description of the race of monstrous offspring that were created from his death.
