Mix J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan with Disney's Recess and overlay that onto the framework of Beowulf, and one possible result is Bea Wolf. Released in 2023 by First Second, writer Zach Weinersmith and artist Boulet, the story begins, much like Beowulf, with an orphan boy (Carl, in this case) who will go on to found a dynasty which will eventually be threatened from without by a towering creature. In this tale, Carl is replaced once he reaches puberty, and the group continues with new leadership for many years, gathering increasing numbers of followers who share the hoard of toys and treats that were amassed starting with Carl's discovery of a treasure box filled with coins. Unfortunately for the children, a man named Mr. Grindle, from whose "family grew all the fun-grinders," sets his sites on them and is determined to destroy their happiness. His power: the ability to cause accelerated aging with his touch. Mr. Grindle attacks their treehouse fortress until Carl's five year-old cousin gathers 14 followers and travels to help. Inevitably, Mr. Grindle is defeated and the children's kingdom is safe, but the ending makes it clear that Mr. Grindle's mother is not going to make things any easier for them. In general, the book maintains and expands on the concepts of Beowulf while maintaining a lighthearted feel throughout.
