Published in 2013 in Spanish by Astiberri Ediciones and reprinted in English by Image in 2016, Santiago Garcia and David Rubin's Beowulf covers all of the main battles described in the original in graphic, bloody detail. The oversized graphic novel format is perfect for the story, and the artist's use of cut-away panels, close-up shots, and splash pages to move the action forward are very well thought-out (the battle with Grendel runs for 2o pages with little dialogue and with sound effects that reflect its intensity). A generally faithful adaptation, there are some variances from the original, including the depiction of several of Beowulf's men unsuccessfully attempting to help him in his battle with Grendel and a scene following the battle with Grendel's mother where Beowulf tells Unferth that Hrunting was worthless in battle.
