Monarch Publishing's Beowulf is an ongoing series that began in 2021 and is largely funded through Kickstarter campaigns. Written by Grant Lankard and featuring the art of Antonio Brandao and Grant Lankard, the series is part time travel and part fantasy. This review is only for issues 1-3.
The story begins in the present day with a Danish mining crew uncovering a dragon and its horde. This in turn triggers a woman and her talking cat to teleport the reincarnation of Beowulf, Victor Sigurd, a struggling writer with an inability to keep a job. The trio then teleport to present day Heorot, which is currently occupied by a golem. As the dragon begins its assault in the present day, Victor is connected spiritually with his predecessor, Beowulf, who is being taught the art of dragon fighting by the wizard Wiglaf. In the inevitable battle, much as in the poem, Beowulf is able to slay the dragon but rather than dying, a nymph uses a mixture with the dragon's blood to revive him. This results in both Beowulf and his reincarnated form to take on the properties of a dragon, including flight and fiery breath.
