In 2001 in issues 20 and 21 of Marvel Comics' Captain Marvel, writer Peter David and artists ChrisCross and Anibal Rodriguez introduced Grendel's mother into the Marvel universe. Author David has a deserved reputation as a writer who can find interesting ways to reinterpret classic comics characters, and in these two issues he does the same with Grendel's mother, later referred to as Big Mother.
In the story, she has been conjured up by a magician who wants her to recover the golden cup stolen from the dragon by the slave, which is described in this story as being the actual Holy Grail. Following a listing of her accomplishments that are described in the poem (as seen from her standpoint, obviously), she declines to help the magician and instead leaves without causing any damage to people or property, a rarity in comics, and especially ironic considering the character. Wandering the streets of L.A., she meets up with talent agent Mordecai P. Boggs, who explains that fame, rather than violence, is the route to power, and she eventually becomes a wrestler.
The character later had a cameo appearance in Marvel's Journey into Mystery # 627 in a story written by Kieron Gillen and with art by Richard Elson, as a member of the Devil's Advocacy. The Advocacy was a convocation of various demonic characters who had appeared in Marvel comics titles since the 1960s who were arguing how to best respond to the threat of Odin to wipe out life on Earth, which was part of a much longer storyline.
