Also in 1999, a strikingly different adaptation of the story of Beowulf appeared in issue 49 of Animaniacs, published by D.C. In an obvious satire titled “Brainwulf,” the team of Walter Corzon and Horacio Ottolini cast the characters Pinky and the Brain as Pinknarf and Brainwulf and combine elements from all three main monsters from the poem into Grendel and Grendel’s mother, here seen as dragons. Altogether, other than the use of the names of Grendel and Hrothgar, there is little connection to the original text but using Brain, the lab mouse with aspirations of world domination, to represent Beowulf allows the writer to focus on the hero’s characteristic bragging and willingness to overcome extreme obstacles.
